This insightful, first-person business case study details the seven-year journey of scaling Lizard Global from a 15-person technical foundation in Kuala Lumpur into a globally recognized, full-service digital product agency. Moving from a structured B2B corporate environment at Apple to a blank commercial canvas in Southeast Asia, the Commercial Director of Lizard Global, Markus, outlines the strategic implementation of strong SEO engines, high-intent B2B sales funnels, and enterprise-grade cross-border delivery frameworks. The narrative demonstrates how doubling down on digital visibility and strict quality benchmarks enabled Lizard Global to secure tier-one corporate clients like Heineken and Hitachi. Now, this proven, battle-tested execution power is returning to the Netherlands to spearhead digital transformation, custom software development, and strategic AI integration for enterprise organizations across Amsterdam and the Randstad.

Strategic Freedom in Blank Canvases: Moving from structured corporate ecosystems (like Apple) to a startup environment allows leaders to build scalable, bespoke commercial engines from scratch.
Agile Pivot as a Growth Engine: Doubling down on digital visibility, thought leadership, and verified client validation (e.g., Clutch reviews) during global disruptions establishes market dominance.
Enterprise-Grade Validation: Successfully delivering complex, high-security digital products for global brands like Heineken opens international doors and elevates internal delivery standards.
Cross-Cultural Scalability: Building an international growth machine requires blending high-performance frameworks with deep cultural empathy and local operational trust.
Proven Model Replication: A battle-tested digital partnership and software delivery model validated in the hyper-competitive APAC region can be seamlessly exported to drive enterprise AI and software transformation in European markets.

Seven years ago, I boarded a plane from my hometown Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur.

My girlfriend at the time, now my wife and mother of our two KL-born sons, packed her bags without knowing how long we'd be gone. We had just bought and renovated our house in Amstelveen. And yet: tickets booked, bags packed, and off on another adventure. On to Asia!

The mission? Put Lizard Global on the map commercially in

  • i.) Malaysia,
  • ii.) South-East Asia, and
  • iii.) the APAC region.

A Blank Canvas and An Enormous Opportunity

I had spent over six years at Apple in B2B. From acquisition to Account Management to Key Account Management. I advised companies like Nike, Tommy Hilfiger and Scotch & Soda on how to get the most out of their Apple hardware and software solutions.

At Apple, everything was perfectly in place: presentations, pitch decks, use cases, net promoter scores, wow-effects. Everything was available with a few clicks on tech giant Apple's intranet for B2B solutions across every conceivable industry.

At Lizard Global, things were different.

When I asked Terence, Lizard Global’s CEO Asia and a friend, from the Netherlands to send over some commercial materials, his answer was simple:

"Just come over here."

It was only when I arrived in Kuala Lumpur that I understood why. It didn't exist yet. No pitch deck. No marketing machine. No sales process. A dozen hard-working developers and a project team formed a strong technical and project foundation, with a commercial blank canvas around it.

At first, I broke out in a sweat, and not just because of the heat in Kuala Lumpur. But that feeling fortunately didn't last long. Because I quickly realised that a blank canvas also means freedom: the freedom to build something yourself.

Building The Machine

The experience I had gained at Apple, I translated into Lizard Global. In close collaboration with key pillars like Jeremy (co-founder & CEO) , Guido (co-founder & CTO) , Terence (CEO Asia), and the entire Lizard Global team. Step by step. In phases. With the goal of not only convincing Dutch clients, but conquering the entire APAC region.

We built:

  • A content strategy and SEO machine that consistently put us at the top of Google
  • A presence on international platforms like Clutch, GoodFirms and Sortlist, not as a business card, but as a growth engine
  • Sales funnels from outbound to account management, from scattered ideas to a tight, scalable structure
  • Industry-focused solutions with tailored service offerings
  • A culture of client satisfaction where NPS and customer reviews weren't a checkbox, but a core value

The real turning point? COVID-19.

While events were cancelled and traditional networks came to a standstill, we doubled down on our online visibility. Client reviews. Cases. Thought leadership. It started with a goal of five reviews on Clutch. It became seventy verified client interviews for projects ranging from a minimum of €25,000 to sometimes €80,000+ (MVP).

Not long after, we ranked globally among the top mobile and web app development companies. Number one in Malaysia. Number one in the Netherlands. And not far behind in Singapore, Belgium, Australia and Indonesia.

The project leads started coming in daily, and to this day we close new projects every single month from all over the world: the Dominican Republic, Vietnam, Switzerland, Suriname, Dubai, the Philippines. You name it and chances are Lizard Global has delivered a milestone there.

The Results, Seven Years Later

From a relatively small team of 15 employees to a full-service one-stop-digital-shop of 55+ specialists at Lizard Global, plus 10 (65+) through our sister organisation /Prompt.

120+ digital projects delivered. 70+ verified client interviews on Clutch. Clients in more than 30 countries across 30+ industries.

From startups to corporations. From Heineken to Hitachi. From Singapore to Australia. From MRT Corp to the Asia Foundation, and the Asian Football Confederation.

Heineken Drinkies

opened doors I never anticipated. Not just because of the name, but because the project pushed our internal processes, security standards and collaboration to a higher level. Heineken flew people to Kuala Lumpur for our workshops. A global rollout followed.

That's what happens when you don't just deliver what a client asks for, but build what a client truly needs.

What Malaysia Taught Me

Professionally, I learned how to build an international growth machine. How to set up a sales organisation from scratch. How to build trust across cultural differences. How to create a scalable delivery and sales model that works worldwide.

Personally, I learned what truly matters.

What Malaysia taught me.png

I got married. We became parents to two boys in Kuala Lumpur. I worked alongside people from dozens of nationalities. I travel from Bali to Singapore, from Penang to the Perhentian Islands. At our tenth Lizard Global anniversary in Bali, I flew to the golf course by helicopter for a round of golf with colleagues, and delivered a project launch with workshops in Manila for the successful Travereel project.

And I picked up something no book can teach you: Work hard. Play hard. Relaks lah.

Work hard. But enjoy the journey.

The Next Mission: Conquering the Netherlands (Amsterdam/Rotterdam) and Europe

After seven years, I'm returning to the Netherlands.

Not because the story in Malaysia is finished, far from it. But because the commercial approach has proven to work. And because it's time to bring that same execution power to Europe.

Lizard Global has its HQ in Rotterdam. My focus for the period ahead: Amsterdam and the Randstad.

We're going to do here what we did in APAC. Build scalable digital partnerships with founders, scale-ups and corporates who want to grow through technology; custom software, mobile and web app development, and the application of AI in business processes, an area we're already deeply invested in and one that will change everything for companies that want to stay ahead in the coming years.
